As a composer who almost always writes for choirs, it is an exciting moment when you get to diversify your musical landscape to include an instrumental ensemble. It was an honour to be commissioned by the University of Missouri-Kansas City choral program to write a new string quartet accompaniment for my work, ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers. The premiere of the work took place in March 2026 under the expert direction of Jennifer Sengin.
The process of writing this new accompaniment was hugely enjoyable. After completing it, I have found myself inspired to think in fresh new ways and I am delighted that Oxford University Press have now made a digital download of the string quartet accompaniment available to purchase.
With more instrumental and chamber orchestra accompaniments for other titles in my catalogue being planned, I am looking forward to exploring these new sounds and textures in days to come.
